~ Artificial Intelligence (AI) ~

Fascinating or creepy or maybe just a little bit of both! My favorite example of artificial intelligence, or AI, is the video on your left. What you see is a robot, a yellow-painted hunk of metal that looks and walks like an animal, a dog to most people, that I refer to as a dogbot. As the video begins you see the dogbot 'walk' towards a blue metal door and stops just shy of reaching it.  But wait until you see what happens next; who's a good boy!

Beginning in 1927 with the German film Metropolis, Stanley Kubrick's 2001 in 1968, Colossus: The Forbin Project in 1970, and on the more modern films of i, Robot, Ex Machina,
Blade Runner, and the 2019 movie I Am Mother, the theme remains the same but the progression is clear. The films tap that basic sense of uneasiness for some, concerning the possibility of machine learning and advanced robotics, and excitement for others who see the future of AI, where it can go and what it can do for us.

Was there someone outside the range of the video above that was holding a remote control thereby enabling the dogbots to perform as they did? Or, were the dogbots actually acting upon the environment much as a human or animal would in a manner that we refer to as learning?  Surely they couldn't be operating in a stimulus-response paradigm, could they? Such is the world of AI. Here is where we are in 2019...
